Fortune Cookie “Factory” & Tommaso’s

In the evening of our first day, we met up with the Cooks who were also on vacation in SF. What a coincidence!  lol.  On our way to dinner we stopped in Chinatown to tour the Fortune Cookie Factory.  When you hear “factory”, you typically envision a big manufacturing plant filled with machines, workers and assembly lines.  This factory was hidden in a dark alley and was about the size of my kitchen and family room combined!  There were only two workers folding and stuffing the cookies by hand!  Can you say carpal-tunnel?  Anyway, the kids loved it and found it to be pretty neat.  They got to eat as many fortune cookie samples as they wished.

After a quick one-minute tour, we headed to Tommaso’s Italian Restaurant which was Zagat rated as the best Italian food in North Beach (SF’s Little Italy).  Opened in 1935, it is the oldest wood-fired brick pizza oven on the West Coast.  We were seated at a table that stretched out as long as the restaurant and shared it with other parties, much like family-style.  We had conversations with our neighbors, and even traded a slice of pizza for two!  Friendly people left and right made you feel right at home.
